Bob Guy was an artist, illustrator and printmaker, born in 1947 and studied painting and printmaking at Kingston University. He lived and worked in Mid Wales from1973. He specialised in wood engraving, a technique pioneered in the late18th century by Thomas Bewick and revived in the 20th. He was elected a member of the Society of Wood Engravers in 2010, and taught wood engraving from his home studio in Llanfyllin, Powys.

Bob’s recent work has involved collaborations with poets and bards such as Peter Meilleur and bard Robin Hughes, resulting in hand made books, which he exhibited at book fairs with Artist Books Online. In his statement for Artist Books Online he wrote about the ‘many possibilities in terms of narrative and technique’ the collaboration with authors provided. He was also interested in exploring the interface between traditional and digital techniques.

While showing nationally and internationally, Bob was keen to maintain a strong connection with Wales and exhibited at the National Eisteddfod with Y Lle Print Gwreiddiol/The Original Print Place, a group of printmakers associated with the Welsh Regional Print Centres, and curated numerous exhibitions at the Llanfyllin Workhouse.

Bob also organised an annual Open Studio at his home in Llanfyllin along with other local artists.

With other local artists he set up Arts Connection, a community arts charity in 1993, which is still going strong today.

Bob was also involved in the local community youth theatre group, Montgomery Youth Theatre, where he held art workshops making sets and props.

Bob has work in the British Library and the Ashmolean Museum, the National Library of Wales as well as numerous private collections.

He died at his home in Llanfyllin on 15th July 2023.

All Bob's work for sale on this website is available from his son Dan Guy, and all proceeds will be shared among his 9 beloved grandchildren.
